Triple Paralympic discus medallist, Dan Greaves, this week displayed that he’s well on the road to success in 2012 as he destroyed his own world record in taking the gold medal in the F44/46 category at the IPC World Athletics Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand on Wednesday.
On the 5th day of what is proving to be a hugely successful championships for Team GB, Greaves, the team captain, threw his way to the top of the podium recording a massive 58.98 metres to comfortably secure the gold medal. This bettered his previous record by 3.45 metres and with the final qualifier for the able-bodied discus at the Beijing Olympics throwing just under 4 metres further, it is clear to see that Team GB has a hugely exciting talent on its hands as we continue to approach the 2012 Games.
On the back of a confident 2010 where Dan unofficially broke his record 4 times, it was his first official attempt of 2011 which saw him reach new highs, showing why he had an underlying confidence coming into this competition.
When asked about his achievement he stated ‘I was really, really confident I would win and set a new world record.’ Even though he made a massive impression on the tournament and was delighted with his performance for the GB team, Dan still found room to criticise himself showing frustration with his first few attempts and claiming he was ‘gutted’ that he was not able to make an official throw of over 60 metres.
