Ashley Mckenzie stole the headlines at the German European Cup this weekend as Britain claimed nine medals in the final event before the World Championships in Paris next month.

The event is one of the most competitive and talent-laden European Cup’s on the circuit as countries prepare to finalise their teams for the World Championships.

GB sealed four gold medals, three silver, two bronze, one fifth-place and four seventh-place finishes to finish second in the medal table behind hosts Germany.

Ashley showed his class in producing one of the stand-out performances of the competition, taking the gold medal in the -60kg category.

GB Head Coach Patrick Roux said: “We are pleased with the medals but this was a tournament to prepare players for the World Championships. The team is on a very positive pathway for Paris.

“It has been a long build up already from the Europeans and we achieved some high quality training blocks abroad. The Olympic group is training very professionally now and we are focused on one objective, London 2012.”
