British Open champion Ashley McKenzie won his first judo World Cup title this weekend with victory over lightweight rival Hovhannes Davtyan in Warsaw.
His victory over the Armenian was the sixth win of the competition for the European Under-23 champion.
In 2010, the 21-year-old Londoner also added the English Senior Open title to his impressive list of achievements and won gold at the German European Cup. The strength in youth throughout the squad was emphasised by the fact that Ashley was one of nine members of Britain’s 2010 World Championships team below the age of the 23.
Speaking of his success Ashley said, “I’ve been working so hard in training and it’s just nice to see that hard work pay off in competition. I’m happy, and this is another big step towards 2012″.
