Ashley McKenzie stormed to a gold medal win as the British team captured five medals at the German European Cup in Hamburg.
The gifted 21-year-old opened his account in the under 60kg class by overcoming Berend Werkman of the Netherlands. In the second round he scored one of the biggest wins of his career after seeing off Ludwig Paischer, Austria’s former two-time European Champion and 2008 Olympic silver medallist. That win was followed up by others over Israel’s Artium Arshansky and Yaakov Abetbool. Ashley sealed one of the most memorable gold medals of his young career by beating Swiss fighter Ludovic Chammartin in the final.
